Biography

Sarah E. Murphy Education Program was endowed in the memory of a lover of all things Baltimore, LAOH, and  Irish. Sarah dedicated her life to others through her support of her heritage and faith. She worked for the Department of Solid Waste for 44 years, retiring in 1996. She worked behind the scenes for the many festivals including the flower mart and the neighborhood ethnic festivals. She was able to blend her love of Baltimore with her love of the Irish. As a result of her efforts, she served as the first woman Grand Marshall of the St. Patrick’s Day parade. She was an active member of the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians, and served as both the state president and two terms as the national president of the LAOH.

Her other love was her alma mater, the Institute of Notre Dame. She really knew who she was, and her three priorities were God, the Irish and IND. Sally was a member of the class of 1951 and remained active with the city school. After her retirement, Sally continued to “give back”. She worked as a full time volunteer at IND, choosing never to accept a salary or compensation for her efforts. She was a behind the scenes worker and a member of the alumnae board for the Institute.
Following her passing Ms. Murphy’s estate continued her love of education. The Sarah E. Murphy Education Program was created through her beloved Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians.
